Welcome to Evanston Fire Fighters Association Local 742
Welcome to the
Evanston Fire Fighters Association Local 742 Home Page! Local
742 was chartered on February 1, 1943. Since that time, the
Evanston Fire Department and the Evanston Fire Fighters
Association have endured many changes and prevailed through some
turbulent times. In 1974, the Evanston
Fire Fighters were the
third International Association of Fire Fighters Local in
Illinois to strike for our Members benefits. Today, Local 742
remains a very
strong local, with membership beginning with the
entry level fire fighter, continuing through Battalion Chief's.

The following is a
joint statement from the City of Evanston and the
Evanston Firefighters Association, IAFF L-742:
“The bargaining teams
from the City of Evanston and the Evanston Firefighters
Association, IAFF L-742 are pleased to announce that a
tentative agreement was reached Friday regarding all
outstanding contractual issues.
Both groups will
recommend ratification by their principals in the next
three weeks. The union will have ratification votes on
August, 30, 31 and September 1st while City
staff will present the agreement to the City Council for
a vote on September 13th.
While we can’t discuss
specifics of the two year agreement, firefighters made
economic concessions in recognition of the City’s
difficult economic circumstances while working in good
faith with the City to ensure the maintenance of safe
and effective staffing levels for the term of the
agreement. This will include the reinstatement of three
firefighters laid-off on July 31st.
The union and Interim
Fire Chief Klaiber have also agreed to meet on a
continual basis towards making good faith efforts to
conserve future costs to maintain proper fire/rescue
emergency response for the city. With continued good
faith efforts both parties are extremely confident that
they will be successful.”

Klaiber Named New Evanston Fire Chief
EVANSTON,
IL – Evanston
City Manager Wally Bobkiewicz announced today his
appointment of Greg Klaiber as the new Chief of
Evanston’s Fire and Life Safety
Services Department. This appointmentfills the vacancy
created by the retirement
of former Chief Alan Berkowsky. A nation-wide search
was undertaken to fill the
position and Klaiber was selected from a field of more
than three dozen applicants.
“Greg Klaiber brings to the position of Evanston Fire
Chief a combination of
accomplishment and expertise in the areas of fire safety
and emergency response
management along with a keen understanding of the
communities that make up
the City of Evanston” said City Manager Wally
Bobkiewicz.
“Chief Klaiber competed for this position among a group
of highly qualified
individuals. His success in this process is not only a
tribute to his skills and
abilities, but to the Evanston Fire Department’s record
of producing outstanding
leaders from within its ranks. I am confident that
Chief Klaiber will continue a
tradition of excellence within the Fire Department while
using his expertise
and understanding of Evanston to lead the department to
new areas of
achievement.” Bobkiewicz added.
Chief Klaiber is an Evanston resident and a graduate of
Evanston Township High
School. As a 25-year veteran of the Department he rose
through the ranks from
Firefighter/Paramedic, Captain, Division Chief, Deputy
Chief and now to the
highest rank of Chief.
Chief Klaiber was named Deputy Chief in February, 2010
and prior to that
served as the Division Chief in charge of Emergency
Medical Services and Specialty
Teams including Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue
and the Water
Rescue/Recovery Teams.
In addition to his duties with the City of Evanston,
Klaiber was a member of the
Board of Education of the Evanston/Skokie School
District 65 (1999-2003), is a
trustee of the Evanston Fourth of July Association and
was an active participant
in Evanston’s Youth Baseball Association. He holds a
Master’s Degree in
Cardiac Rehabilitation from Northeastern Illinois
University and a Bachelor’s
Degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of
Illinois.

2010. Local 742 would like to extend our heart felt
gratitude to all those who came to help us rededicate this
special park. Thanks to the supporters, the neighbors, the
local members who worked countless hours, those who purchased
bricks and benches, those who came to the ceremony from other
Local's and the AFFI Honor Guard, Evanston Honor Guard, Evanston
Police Department Honor Guard, all of our distinguished guests
and speakers, Interim Chief Greg Klaiber, and all who came to
honor those who have selflessly sacrificed their lives in the
Line of Duty and our fallen comrades' that have served the
Evanston Fire Department. It was a wonderful tribute, and
we hope the neighborhood enjoys the park for years to come.

Although
"Friends of Firemen’s Park" is now completed, your opportunity
to purchase bricks for the park has not run out. Orders
are still being taken.
Your name or loved one will be deeply engraved

Please sign up both current and Retired Members so
that you don't miss important announcements such as retirements,
funerals, current events, etc. Too many times Brothers and
Sisters miss out on these events due to a Kelly Day, vacation
day, etc. By joining the list, I will be able to send out
a notification to each member who signs up to keep you all
better informed as to what is going on. To help in that,
